Basement Remodeling

A great solution for an overcrowded home. If you feel that you need room to spread out, room for a new home office, another bedroom, guestroom or playroom, the basement is an excellent choice.

Although your basement is not counted in the total square footage of your home, it still will add value to your home from a reseller perspective. Just as a guest house is considered to be personal property, a basement can be just a great, livable area in your home.

Since most basements end up with household items that need to be stored, try to design your new basement layout so that it accomodates both storage and livability. If you can create some sort of closet space to put boxes and other items in, that will really clean up the area and create space for your new basement remodeling plans.

Due to the fact that your basement is at least partially underground, it will accumulate moisture. The last thing you want to deal with is a mildew or mold accumulation. One idea to combat this is to purchase a dehumidifier, which will substantially improve the air quality. The floors and walls should be insulated and sealed. This should also help to minimize moisture in the basement.

Basement Remodeling and Things to Consider
Planning in advance is crucial. Determine a budget and figure out if it is realistic to transform your basement into the room you want with the amount you have to spend.

Take a good look at the space you have to work with and try to determine if the space is transformable. For example, if you are looking to create a nice and cozy den, that might not be possible with low ceilings or lots of exposed pipes.

Does your furnace have the ability to heat the basement, or will you have to install a second furnace for that space? If the basement is only going to be used as a rec room or workout room, you may not need to worry about heating.
