Emergency Plumbing

Most homeowners never think in advance about what they will do in case of a plumbing emergency. Let's say there is a break in a pipe or a valve is boken off. Gallons of water spraying everywhere is a nightmarish and very stressful situation that no one wants to experience. The first thing you need to do is shut off the water supply to the leak, which most likely means you will need to shut off water flow to the house. By the time you have located the valve, which is typically located at the edge of the property under a piece of steel or concrete, a substantial amount of water has leaked. Your home may have already been exposed to nightmarish water damage. A nice prevent for this situation is to have a plumber install an emergency shut-off valve in your garage. This is a great and easy operate way to control the water flow into your home. Often these are installed with a water pressure control device so you can get even waterflow into your home.

Prep for Winter Time
Well in advance of the first snowfall, it is a good idea to take steps to prevent a potential plumbing nightmare. You should shut off the lawn irrigation system and drain the lines so water does not freeze and damage them. You can also wrap exposed outside water pipes with pipe insulation. Another obvious one is to disconnect any water hoses, coil them up and store them for the season.

Prevent Kitchen Drain Clogs
Eventhough the majority of kitchen sinks these days are equipped with electric disposals, this doesn't mean you should pour anything and everything down there. Here are three obvious steps you can take to keep clogged kitchen sinks to a minimum.

Don't pour coffee grounds into the sink.
Don't pour grease down the sink.
Keep usage of chemical cleaners to a minimum.
