Pest Control In Your Garage

The garage can be a prime nesting area for pests. The garage is often the most unkempt space in the house. Dirt and dust accumulate. In some houses, there are "secret" entryways into the garage that pests often utilize. Here are some ideas to reduce the intrusion of pests into your garage.

Make sure the seals of your garage doors are intact. This may seem obvious, but sometimes, concrete driveway and the bottom lip of a garage door don't join correctly when the door is closed. By installing a heavy duty weather seal, you can eliminate the cracks that pest use to gain access to your garage. This is also true for entry doors in the garage and home. Make sure the seal is correctly installed to prevent pests from entering your house.

Make sure vents have good screens. In a garage, you need proper ventilation. There will be vents in the walls or ceiling to accomodate proper airflow. You should check these areas to make sure that they have screens. If they do, check the actual screen to make sure it is doing its job of keeping pests out. If your screen has holes in it, these may be holes created by pests to get into your garage.

Pest traps. There are a variety of traps you can use to catch intruders. Among traps are spring traps, glue board traps, live traps and bait traps.

A little clean up goes a long way
A big reason that critters find nice hiding spots in your garage is that garages are inherently a cluttered and neglected space. A garage is far from the average room in your house, and yet isn't quite the outside or backyard either. Because of this, people are inclined to toss things in the garage. They will move out the space for the car and start piling up items that need to be sorted out. If you take a little time to sort through the clutter in the garage and keep it organized, you will be eliminating many potential hiding spots for critters. After you organize it, keep it organized and sweep it out and/or hose down the floor to get rid of dust. Find corners that need to be cleaned an get them cleaned. A little every week goes a long way to eliminating those problem areas that are potential lairs for pests.

"Cruelty free"
You many be surprised to find that there are a few "cruelty free" pest traps that excel in the elimination of unwanted critters. A company called Erodetrol makes environmentally safe products for the humane removal of rodents. Rat Zapper also offers a great option for rodent elimination.
