What's the Skinny on Dual Pane Windows?
Unless you recently purchased a brand new home, well within the last 10 years or so, chances are likely that the windows in your home are single pane glass. Living in a home that has single pane glass windows has some disadvantages, as you may have found by now. One main disadvantage is that you will have to crank your thermostat up a bit higher to supplement warm air in the winter. Single pane glass windows are not very thick and they don't keep the heat in your home very well. The same holds true for the summer months. Any cool air in your home will dissipate quicker through single pane glass.
Dual pane glass replacement windows are a great idea for any homeowner. You will notice a comfort level improvement right away. The most popular replacement windows are vinyl framed. Vinyl is an outstanding material windows because it requires little maintenance to keep clean. They are also very strong. It is unlikely that they will crack or break.

Dual pane glass windows are constructed using two panes of 1/8" thick glass. Some companies use argon as an added layer of weather proofing between the panes. The theory with argon is that it is denser than air, preventing air from seeping inside the barrier. Not all companies treat their windows with argon, but regardless, the 2 panes of glass will make a huge difference in your comfort level at home.
An added bonus to your new windows is UV protection. Some manufacturers, for example Simonton, use what is know as Low E (Emissivity) Glass. This coated glass prevents long wave infared energy from passing into the home.
